This guide to the museums and places of interest in the Maremma region is meant to be a kind of "compass" for exploring this extraordinary part of Tuscany.
In the Maremma, art can be admired in all its forms, from the most ancient, precious testimonies of centuries past to those of modern times. Works created by human hand and by the wondrous forces of nature are a demonstration of the vitality of this area.
In nearly every town of the province there is an exhibition space of some kind, where the history of that fragment of land and its people is told with amazing wealth and variety. Every page of local history comprises not only the priceless heritage of prehistory and the Etruscan era but also the remains of the mineral and metal extraction and working tradition, which, dating back centuries, is very much a part of the evolution and natural environment of this part of Italy.
The environmental heritage of the Maremma, with the variety of its landscapes, is the backdrop to local history, where an important role is played by agriculture, and to local traditions; here, sacred art has a place next to contemporary art, offering an all round cultural vision of the nature of each place.
The authorities of the Province of Grosseto are committed to promoting and developing the educational value of each museum and exhibition space. The main aim of creating, first, a System of Museums and ultimately the Network of Museums and Places of Interest in the Maremma, is to coordinate the management of cultural assets throughout the Province, rationalising the exhibition offer and strengthening cultural output by creating synergies between the tourism market, the environment, educational opportunities and professional training resources.
Our goal is thus to enhance the value of each page of the precious history of the province. We hope that the Guide you are holding will be useful as a compass not only to the many people who visit the Maremma but also to the inhabitants of the region so that we can all follow and learn from the historic and nature itineraries available for discovering this extraordinary area.
Wishing you a very pleasant journey!
