The museums of Colline del Fiora dell'Albegna
|
The area of the Fiora hills, whose tufa terrain is a feature both of the countryside and of the architecture of the area, has been densely inhabited since ancient times and many archaeological remains, often monumental, survive to this day.
Many of these have been brought to the City of Tufo Park. The two centres of the Park are at Sovana and Sorano, each with exhibition areas and a variety of itineraries. At Pitigliano, the Museum of the Etruscan Civilisation and the Open-air museum are recent additions to the museum circuit, added to which are the Museum of Sacred Art in Palazzo Orsini and the itineray through the Jewish quarter.
In the neighbouring Albegna Hills there is also a variety of museums: a small museum system is in the Comune of Manciano, where the Museum of Prehistory and Proto-history has found its ideal complement in the Etruscan-Roman Section in Saturnia (Ciacci Collection), and several services in the area, such as the Archaeology Workshop of Montemerano and the Archaeology Research Centre in Maremma in Marsiliana (locality Sgrillozzo). A newly-built museum, with a strong link with the archaeology of the area, is in Scansano, which is accompanied by the Wine Museum. The Archive Centre of Magliano is also of note, however, this is not part of the Maremma Museum Network.
