history and purpose
The Museum of Archaeology and Art of theMaremma occupies three floors and fortyrooms of the Old Court building in the cen-tre of Grosseto. The first section contains the archaeologi-cal collection made by the founder of themuseum in 1860 Canon Giovanni Chelli(Siena 1809 -Grosseto 1869).The nucleusis a collection of Etruscan cinerary urnsfrom Volterra and Chiusi. The next sectionis dedicated to the larger provincial archae-ological centre,Roselle, the Etruscan cityfounded at the end of the Iron Age,con-quered by Rome in 294 B.C.and a diocesedocumented from the end of the 5th centu-ry.From the ancient necropolis comes theStele of the Warriors (6th century B.C.),from the Roman forum come two statuegroups, one public, linked to the imperialcult (ca.50 A.C)and one private, perhapsthe self-glorification of a local family ofrank (early 2nd century A.D.)Carolingian architectural decorations comefrom the Paleo-Christian church, whichpredates the cathedral. The second floor contains the collection ofarchaeological finds in the Maremma, where on display there is an importanteuboical geometric crater from PesciaRomana (ca 730 B.C.),Etruscan ware fromVetulonia (II Circle of Fur)and Marsiliana(Circle of Ivory),amphora and many otherarticles which document Etruscan move-ments in archaic times. The museum visitsnext looks at Romanisation with a displaycomparing the persistence of Etruscanculture (language, writing, funeral rites)with the innovations introduced by theRomans (votive deposits, rustic settle-ments).The last rooms is dedicated to the"collections":these contain some verybeautiful remains acquired by the museumover the years but whose origins are notsufficiently documented. The history ofGrosseto is introduced in the last room onthe third floor and recounted in more detailin the nearby Citylab Museum.
