history and purpose Between 1998 and 2003,the old town ofGrosseto underwent extensive archaeologi-cal investigation, brining new data to light. The museum aims to display the results ofthe research and also the methods and toolsused.New technologies are widely used inthe museum and large-scale graphic recon-struction of scenes from daily life illustratethe social structure, economy, trade andculture during key periods of the city'shistory. The layout of the Museum is on two levels:the first is the chronological narration fromthe archaeologist's point of view,i.e.fromthe most recent events to the most ancient, and a display of the work of the archaeolo-gist from the excavation to the final synthe-sis of the findings. Each of the rooms in the chronological sec-tion are arranged by period, beginning withthe great Medici works of late 16th centuryand arriving at low medieval era of thestone-built city and then the first highmedieval village of huts. The methodologysection has three channels of information:action, which explains the work of thearchaeologist during excavation and in thelaboratory, the finds and then thesynthesis,in which the archaeologistorganises and interprets the data in order toreconstruct his version of the past, oftendifferent from or more complex than hadoriginally been taken for granted. The museum is housed, together with theDegree Course in Conservation,Communication and Management ofArchaeological heritage of the Universityof Siena,Grosseto section,in the formerClarisse Convent (late 16th century)
