history and purpose This new archaeology museum, opened in2000,is named after the doctor and ama-teur archaeologist who,at the end of the19th century, recognised the traces of theancient Etruscan city of Vetulonia in thearchaeological remains at Colonna diBuriano. The museum has seven rooms.Room A isdedicated to Isidoro Falchi and his excava-tions and items of funeral ware includinghut-shaped urns from the necropolis ofPoggio alla Guardia and Poggio Belvederefrom the Villanoviana age (9th-8th centuryB.C.).The Silver Lioncub Circle, theGolden Fibula and the Foreigner'sCupboard all date back to the"Orientalizzante"period (late 8th-7th cen-tury B.C.)to which same period the famousstone Stele of the Warrior Auvile Feluskealso dates. In room B.the exhibits continuewith the first Circle of Fur and the exami-nation of the monumental tomb ofDiavolino II.Also on display is the gold-ware (Lancetti collection)and an alphabetcarved on stone from the Dupiane. The last two rooms are dedicated to thelocal area:remains from the PoggioPelliccia mound (mid 7th-mid 5th centuryB.C.)a monumental tomb of an aristocrat-ic family (room C),several items from thenecropolis of Val Berretta (7th-6th centuryB.C;room D).Rooms E-G on the lowerfloor are dedicated to the Hellenic andRoman era, with remains coming fromCosta Murata and Poggiarello Renzetti(particulary interesting of which is the ter-racotta building material which decoratedthe portico of the so-called ‘Casa diMedea ’)as well as items of funeral wareand votive articles from that period.A visit to the museum is complete with anarchaeology route from the centre of thetown, where medieval buildings were con-structed on the Etruscan defensive walls, tothe dwelling areas (Costa Murata,Poggiarello Renzetti)and, lower down thevalley,on to the necropolis.
