history and purpose
The Sluice-Gate Factory, also called Casa Rossa, was designed and built by the Jesuit engi-neer LeonardoXimenes in 1767-68,under the patronage of Pietro Leopoldo of Lorraine as part of a systema-tic draining project for the Maremma. The Casa Rossa was supposed to be the main means forreclaiming the marshes of Castiglione, keeping the salt water separate from the fresh water andthus preventing the formation, according to Ximenes,of the miasms which were thought to bethe cause of malaria. The completely renovated building holds the sluice gate machinery onthe first floor and,on the floor above, originally destined to be the gate-keepers'living quar-ters,there is now a Marshland Archive Multimedia centre, where there is one of the remotecontrols for watching the protected areas (the others are in the Park of the Maremma and onMount Labbro). The observation system comprises three cameras which are aimed at Diaccia Botrona, anotherabove the Casa Rossa, one on the Island of Clodia and one among the reeds in the marshes.Visits can thus observe the flora and fauna of the marshlands in real time without disturbingthe ecosystem.
