history and purpose
Inaugurated in 1996,the Museum is part ofthe "City of Tufo"Archaeology Park,which includes the Etruscan necropolis ofSovana and the settlements of San Roccoand Vitozza.The Museum occupies part of the 14th cen-tury castle where ceramic objects from theMiddle Ages and the Renaissance,found inthe area or inside so-called "Medievalbutti",are on display.Of special interest in the museum is asmall room in the octagonal tower,richlydecorated with 16th century frescoes("grottesche")and scenes from mythologyon the side walls,where a four part madri-gal score has also been painted.Guided visits of the underground walks ofthe 16th century castle,an important exam-ple of Renaissance military architecture,leave from the Museum situated in PiazzaCairoli.Near to Sorano are the rupestriansettlements of S.Rocco and Vitozza whichare also part of the "City of Tufo"Archaeology Park.Rupestrian settlement of S.RoccoThe settlement is situated on the SP 22,twokilometres before Sorano.At the entrancethere is the 18th century church dedicatedto S.Rocco and,nearby,a panoramic tree-lined terrace overlooking the village,theLente river valley,the Orsini Castle and thesurrounding countryside of extraordinarybeauty.A variety of places carved into thetufo bear witness to human presence fromancient times.SAN QUIRICO DI SORANORUPESTRIAN SETTLEMENT OFVITOZZAOn the northern limit of the village ofS.Quirico lies Vitozza,one of the largestrupustrian complexes in Tuscany.Inhabitedbetween the 11th and 12th centuries,thesettlement comprises over two hundredcaves carved into the tufo on different lev-els.In medieval times churches and fortifi-cations were added which today are stillvisible.From Vitozza you can reach thesource of the Lente river and the 19th cen-tury aqueduct,an architectural jewel.
