history and purpose The Spanish Fortress, which dominates the old town, was a military fortress built to defend the town and the port from pirate attack in the early 17th century. The Fortress, now completely restored, is home to two permanent exhibits, which are the forerunners of a "Museum of the Sea" , the Museum of Shipwrights and the exhibit of "Submerged Memories" The exhibit displays the stages of underwater archaeological research, from its still empirical beginnings up to the presentation of the results of more scientific work, carried out in the 80s and 90s. The museum tour includes two floors of the Fortress in which finds from the Roman era, made in the waters around the Islands of Giglio, Giannutri the Formiche di Grosseeto and the Costa Argentario are on display. There is an information display about the finding of the ancient relict of the Campese (6th century B.C.) Isle of Giglio. Two rooms are dedicated to Shipwrights and their art and trade.
