history and purpose
The museum focuses on the land and rural society of the southern part of the Maremma from the early 1900s to the land reclamation and Land Reform (1951-1960) The museum is laid out in chronological order in three rooms. The first room illustrates social history between the early 1900s and 1948, with special attention given to the struggle for land, the hardship of the métayer and the repeated episodes of "latifundium". There are reproductions of paintings, displays of tools and objects from work and daily life and a sequence of photographs of old rural buildings in the Capalbio, Albinia and Marsiliana area. The second room focuses on the transformation of the landscape and is dedicated to the period which, from 1930 and the birth of the land reclamation consortium for Osa-Albegna, saw the completion of great water and agrarian works and the construction of the banks of the rivers Albegna and Osa. The period between 1951 and 1977 is illustrated in the last room, showing the beginnings of the Land Reform and the later establishing of a governing body for the Maremma. The photographic exhibits are copies of photographic archives in the Region of Tuscany's Historic Archive of the Land Reform in the former farmstead in Grancia on the outskirts of Grosseto. Together with maps of the land division, the room also has a section for the transformation of the land, noting especially the construction of the Aqueduct del Fiora which carried water from the springs on Mount Amiata to the surrounding countryside. The panels also describe the social and educational activities organised by the governing body for the Maremma such as literacy programs for children and professional training courses for adults.
