history and purpose The five rooms of exhibits in the Museum of the Mercury Mines of Mount Amiata, housed inthe old Sforza-Cesarini palazzo, illustrate the history of the mines and daily life of miners onMount Amiata in ancient and modern times.A model of the territory showing the location ofthe mines is the starting point for the museum tour. There are explanations of the traditional techniques used for testing and mining over the cen-turies and the display of tools and instruments illustrate how work was organised underground, with women and children often playing an important role. The history of the use of mercury, which had such serious consequences for health especially for miners extracting and workingwith cinnabar,is also illustrated. The museum tour ends on the note of the closure of the mines and the social struggle of theminers in their fight for better working conditions.Of particular note is a small archaeologysection containing a collection of lithic instruments such as mallets, pickaxes, axes and hornhoes found during excavations and dating back to the 3rd millennium B.C.There is also a min-eral exhibit.
