history and purpose The ethnographic collection is housed inthe former blacksmith's forge in the villageof Santa Caterina,Roccalbegna.The twofloors of the museum contain the collectiondocumenting working life and religiousrites in the area of Mount Amiata,begun byAlessandro Giustarini.The Museum's recently defined mission isto illustrate the work,traditions and riteslinked to the flame and the tree,highlight-ing the importance of the Feast of the HayStack and the "Focarazza"celebrated everyyear in Santa Caterina on 24 November.On the ground floor there are informationpanels illustrating tools and objects nowbelonging to the traditions of the past.The theme of the tree is handled with anillustration about chestnuts;a collection oftools used by blacksmiths,charcoal-burn-ers,miners,potters and kiln-men illustratethe use of fire.There is a collection of ritual objects illus-trating the religious rites related to fire andvegetation,the most characteristic beingthe "Maggerini"("Maggiolini"or"Maggiaioli")and the rituals of Holy Week.The second floor is entirely dedicated tothe Festa della Focarazza (the ancient tradi-tional feast of Saint Catherine ofAlessandria)illustrated by means of a pho-tographic tour of 45 black and white photo-graphs showing the strong,emotionalimpact of the event.
