history and purpose Founded in 1933,the Museum of SacredArt of the Diocese of Grosseto,togetherwith the Museum of Archaeology and Artof the Maremma,occupies the 18th OldCourt building in the centre of Grosseto.Itwas originally located near to the Cathedralin Piazza Innocenzo II but bomb damageduring WWII caused its closure to the pub-lic.The museum has been in its currentlocation since 1975,thanks to an agreementbetween the Diocese and the Town Hall ofGrosseto.The exhibits are displayed inchronological order and introduced by thefounder,Mons.A.Cappelli's,own collec-tion of works from the Siena area and fromthe antiques market,amongst which TwoSaints,the remains of a polyptych attrib-uted to Sano di Pietro and to the Maestrodell ’Osservanza (mid 15th century)are ofparticular note.Of great value is the collection of worksmostly coming from the Cathedral ofGrosseto,but also from many churches inthe Diocese,attributable to Siena artistsworking in the area.The 13th century FinalJudgement originally in the church of SanLeonardo in Grosseto is attributed to Guidoda Siena or his school,the Christ of Pity byPietro di Domenico (late 15th century),theMadonna by Girolamo di Benvenuto (early16th century),the Madonna of the Cherriesby Sassetta (mid 15th century)comingfrom the Cathedral of San Lorenzo as wellas fragments of masonry from the exteriorof the Cathedral (Agostino di Giovanni,14th century)and marble angels (G.A.andB.Mazzuoli,1708),originally placed asdecoration on the Madonna delle Graziealter and dismantled during the restorationof the Cathedral at the end of the 19th cen-tury.The exhibits also include a rich collectionof sacred vestments,silverware and reli-quaries.
