history and purpose
Following Papal orders in 1555 and 1569and measures by the Grand Duchy ofTuscany in 1570 and 1571,many Jewswere forced to emigrate to the smaller andmore tolerant fiefs on the borders betweenTuscany and Lazio (the Counties ofPitigliano of the Orsini family,Santa Fioraof the Sforza family,The Ottieri familyin Castell'Ottieri and the Duchy of Castroof the Farnese family). This is the origin ofthe Jewish community in Pitigliano which,in the 16th century, was consolidated by theerection of a Temple in 1598.The Synagogue is in the old town ofPitigliano, probably in the same place cho-sen by the first Jews for prayer. The build-ing has been recently restored and can bevisited (except on Saturdays and Jewishholidays)as part of a tour of the places, carved out of the tufa, where the communi-ty lived aspects of daily and ritual life:thebaths, the canteen and the slaughter-house,the dye-works and the baker of unleavenedbread.Outside the city walls, you can visitthe Jewish Cemetery (by prior arrange-ment).Today,even though the Jewish communityin Pitigliano has few members, the "LittleJerusalem"Association remains active andaims at promoting the Hebrew culture, enhancing the value of local history and theconservation of Hebrew monuments.
