history and purpose The David Lazzaretti Study Centre wasestablished by the Commune of Arcidossoat the beginning of the 1980s and is housedin the Town Hall. The Centre holds objects, manuscripts and testimonies of the"prophet of Amiata"and of the "jurisda-vidic"movement.The Study Centre isdivided into two sections:one holding thecollection of texts and letters written byDavid Lazzaretti, registers and documentsregarding religious and daily life in theCommunity, enriched with iconographicand photographic material, and a librarycollection on Lazzaretti and experiences oflife in his community. The second sectiondocuments the history of the movementwith the reconstruction of its most impor-tant moments using photographic material, paintings, objects, clothing and banners. The Centre is dedicated to the figure ofDavid Lazzaretti, born in Arcidosso in1834 (died 1878).Lazzaretti believed hewas the instrument of God for a greatreforming mission which was to haveinvolved the Church and all nations.Between 1868 amd 1878,Lazzaretti gavelife to an important "social experience"with its spiritual centre on Mount Labbro, where a tower, hermitage and church, ofwhich the remains are still visible, werebuilt next to the grotto,a destination forprayer and gatherings,The strong spiritual message of DavidLazzaretti, who,in just a few years, hadacquired many followers on Mount Amiataand elsewhere, was part of an experience oflife as a community, the "Society ofChristian Families".The local authoritiestried to hinder the growth of the movementin any way possible, prohibiting even theuse of cement in the construction of thetower, which was therefore erected in drystone.David Lazzaretti was killed by thepolice at the gates of Arcidosso on 18August 1878,as he lead a peace processiondown from Mount Labbro.
