Mineral and Nature Park of Gavoranno

Address
piazzale livello +240 – Pozzo Impero snc. – Gavorrano
Museum
The Mineral and Nature Park of Gavorrano was established in July 2003 to redevelop and re-qualify marks left in the landscape by mining. As of today, two separate old mining areas have been redeveloped for visitor access; Parco delle Rocce, or Rock Park, and the area called Ravi-Marchi. The Rock Park hosts a reception centre and the entrance to the Museo in Galleria, or Tunnel Museum. The museum, in a 150 metre-long tunnel, originally used to store explosives, is an evocative educational centre. Visitors, along the exhibition path, can explore real or reconstructed stages of mine construction, operations, and support works in an experience accompanied by sound, light and images which recreate the conditions of life inside the mine. Exiting the Tunnel Museum, you can go up to the Teatro delle Rocce, or Rock Theatre, passing, on the way, a small church dedicated to San Rocco (XVIII-XIX century) frescoed by a young contemporary artist. The path also leads past a contemporary art sculpture park with particular geological characteristics. The semi-circular open-air Rock Theatre, carved out of the foot of the San Rocco quarry, is a place of great beauty, where the natural landscape blends with the signs of human labour in a design project that has chosen to create harmony between present use and the history of the site. The two thousand-seat theatre is a multipurpose space that hosts theatrical shows, concerts, festivals and other cultural events. The second visitor area of the park is that of the mining area of Ravi-Marchi, an outdoor industrial archaeology site, connected to the Rock Park by shuttle bus. Here, you can visit the surface facilities of the old mine, decommissioned in 1965 and now restored, particularly the mine scaffolding, transport systems and raw pyrite processing equipment. There is also an educational space within the area and guided tours, educational workshops, theatrical shows, conferences and conventions are routinely organized.
