La Casa Rossa Ximenes, or Red House of Ximenes, was built by Jesuit engineer Leonardo Ximenes in 1765-68 as part of the reclamation of the marshland of Castiglione della Pescaia. The reclamation process was by controlled flooding and deposition with the hydraulic control of winter high-waters, while ensuring adequate water supply for fisheries in the dry periods. Still preserved are the interior and external environments and technological structures such as sluices, gates and gearings, still workable, though in disuse. There are guided tours of the Casa Rossa Ximenes Multimedia Museum, boat tours of the Diaccia Provincial Nature Reserve and hiking or mountain bike tours of the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve. There are also bird-watching activities, “Design and Realization” workshops, cultural events, educational activities for school groups of all levels, activities concerning the environment, nature conservation, history, archaeology and the ideation and organization of cultural events and activities, nature photography workshops, arts and crafts exhibitions, music festivals and theatre tradition, tours of the historical and archaeological naturalistic issues of the territory of the Municipality of Grosseto and Castiglione della Pescaia and excursions throughout the province of Grosseto.
