Museum

Palazzo Nerucci, a beautiful example of 16th sixteenth-century architecture, is located in the old part of Castel del Piano. On its first floor, it houses the art collection of Castel del Piano, which is divided into different sections. First, there are paintings and drawings, then sculptures and finally archaeological finds, which were collected over the years thanks to legacy donations of local families. On one side of the Museum there are paintings, drawings and sculptures, including the so called “Salone dei Notabili”, with 8 portraits of some “uomini illustri ” in Castel del Piano, who have contributed to the social, economic and artistic growth of the territory.
Afterwards comes the Collection of Art, consisting of a first nucleus of paintings from a late-1800 legacy, among which stands the self portrait of Rosalba Carriera, a famous Venetian artist of the ’18th century, and an embroidered portrait of Grand Duke Leopold of Lorraine. Other works include the “Madonna and Child” and the “Ginanneschi Table”, a view of the village of Castel del Piano in the 18th century. The last three rooms of the wing house the Edo Cei Pinacoteca, with caricatures, posters and paintings by the artist, testifying his connection with local events and people in the mid of the last century, and the sculptures by Piero Bonacina, contemporary stone and wood works. At the other end of the Museum there is the Antiquarium, an archeological collection of about 120 pieces which belong to well known types in the areas of southern Etruria, i.e the tuff areas, the Chiusi area and the valley of the River Ombrone. Most ofthe pieces date back to the 1st through 3rd centuries B.C.
