Palazzo Orsini Museum of Pitigliano

Address
Piazza Fortezza Orsini, 25 – Pitigliano
Museum
The museum is housed by Palazzo Orsini, which was founded in fourteenth century, enlarged by Count Niccolò II Orsini and modified in the 1500s by Niccolò IV. In the twenty-one rooms of the museum, as well as recently restored fifteenth-century frescoes and painted ceilings, there is antique furniture and furnishings, gold and silver jewellery, antique coins, wooden sculptures, paintings on canvas and wood and precious fabrics from the main places of worship across the region. From the Cathedral of Sovana comes the “Madonna Enthroned with Child Crowned by Two Angels Between Saint Peter and Saint Francis”, painted in 1494 and attributed to Guidoccio Cozzarelli of Siena, and the door of a tabernacle with a Pietà, dated between 1467 and 1470 due the presence of the coat of arms of Bishop Tommaso Testa-Piccolomini. Finally, there is a wooden statue, of fifteenth-century Lombard craftsmanship, depicting Count Niccolò III Orsini, two paintings of “St. Michael the Archangel” and “The Redeemer of Souls” by Francesco Zuccarelli, artist born in 1702 in Pitigliano, and, in the room historically called the “Loggette”, a cycle of frescoes portraying the Orsini Counts.

Part of the museum is the Old St. Peter’s Cathedral in Sovana, a splendid example of Romanesque cathedral (sec. X-XII). At the entrance a small fee of € 2.00 is required (reduced ticket: € 1.00).
